It is hard to believe that there was a time when I would participate in 30+ exchanges per year. Today, that number has dropped significantly but I wish that I could say that my personal stitching has increased, it has not! What is wrong with me?

I do miss the excitement of meeting all the exchange deadlines and the joy of opening packages with great anticipation. I had the opportunity to do this when Joan's package was pulled from my mailbox. Here is what I gently unwrapped:

I was initially going to finish this as an ornament but I did a lot of ornament finishing just before Christmas so I decided to do something different. I decided to make a Scissor Pocket and am happy with how it turned out. It was also nice to change things up a bit, I hope to do more of that in the future.

Today I received my HOE Santa Ornament from Ellen. She selected a design from one of my all time favorite designers, Mary Garry. What a beautiful ornament:

The Santa face fabric was perfect for the finishing on this ornament. I must say this is a favorite design of mine; I love the small Merry Christmas tin stencil. I keep saying I will stitch this for my tree so I have added it to my 2012 "To Stitch" list. I must place an order for more of those adorable tin stencils because I used the last one in my stash.

I can hardly believe it, I moved back to the northeast from Texas with great anticipation of a snow filled winter where I would spend much time skiing on the beautiful mountains in Vermont only to find that THERE IS NO SNOW… yet (there is still a little time left and I have hope).

Another One For The Tree

I am so excited; I just received the most beautiful ornament from Hazel H. who stitched for me in the HOE Stitcher’s Choice Ornament Exchange.

I love everything about this ornament: the design, the perfect stitching and the fabulous ruched trim. I love ruched trim but find it extremely time consuming and appreciate the extra time and effort on this one. This year I have two Christmas trees, the first is in our family room and it is where Santa will leave the family gifts.

The second is my latest purchase and it sits in the kitchen, where it will remain throughout the year. This tree has a more rustic look and is perfect for displaying my needlework ornament.

After the holiday I will decorate the tree based on the yearly holiday or season. I need to spend some time in 2012 stitching up seasonal designs for the tree; my favorite by far will be when I decorate it for Halloween.

This past summer I found a wonderful Needlework store in southern VT called In Stitches Fine Needlepoint. Although it is a Needlepoint store vs. Cross Stitch Shop I entered hoping they may also carry cross stitch but she did not. Instead I found an array of gorgeous fibers bursting with color and many beautiful hand painted needlepoint canvases, including Prairie Schooler. I instantly fell in love with the shop and I found the owner (Maria) to be beyond friendly and extremely helpful. I entered hoping to walk out with some cross stitch but departed with some great Needlepoint projects. Needlepoint is not new to me, I had done it many years ago and, although I did not want to add yet another “hobby” to my list I could not resist. After a quick refresher from Maria I managed to complete these two projects:

The minute I saw the “University” themed stockings I immediately knew that I needed to order the designs and stitch them for my two sons.

My latest needlepoint project is The Wizard of Oz characters, they are adorable. I will share pictures of that in a later post.

Well, I keep saying that I will do some finishing work on a number of ornaments but I have yet to find my way up to my sewing room…maybe today and then again maybe not!

Tis The Season

The December rush is upon us and like so many others I have been busy preparing for the holiday season. At our house part of the holiday season includes my birthday, which is celebrated just days after Christmas. Last week a package arrived from my dear friend Vonna and when I opened it I found a beautiful Birthday surprise...

A wonderful Yankee Candle Tart Warmer. This is so pretty and the Holiday Pine scented tart serves to put Christmas in the air; the scent is perfect and oh so nice.

I also found a very special item tucked inside, this handmade birds nest...

I saw Vonna's post on these cleverly crafted little birds nest ornaments and loved them. I especially loved the German Legend behind the nest:

An Old German Legend tells of the magic of all the world's birds bursting into song, as if with one voice, the night the Christ child was born. If a family's Christmas tree contained a birds nest, they would be granted the gift of health, wealth and happiness throughout the year. It is our hope that this little nest adorns your tree and the legend may come true for you.

Vonna's gift arrived the very day that I was planning to decorate the tree so it became the 1st one placed onto our tree. My hope is that the German Legend holds true and we are granted the gift of health, wealth, and happiness in 2012; I am a believer.

Have you seen the fabulous pincushions on Cathy's Blog? Oh my word, I just love these and I let her know it. I immediately emailed to order one and was lucky enough to receive this beauty...

Cathy's Mom does the gorgeous tatting and Cathy constructs the pincushion, what a talented team! I am such a huge fan of "Mom's" tatting and am so excited to have yet another piece of her handwork. Thanks Cathy/Mom for filling my order and selecting a beautiful Pincushion for me, I love it.

The HOE blog had a Christmas Box Exchange that I signed up for. I was a bit reluctant to sign up given the mail date was December 1st, oh such a busy time of the year! Exchanges Keep Rolling In...

I am playing “catch up” so I have lots to share…

I participated in a Personal Exchange with Yuko and recently received a rather large box filled to the brim with some amazing items. There was so much in the box that it was difficult to photograph everything. When I opened the box this is what I saw…

I could barely believe my eyes and was not sure if there was a bottom to this box. The items just poured out: hand dyed fabric, three fat quarters, two wonderful scissors, lace trim, covered buttons, jumbo clips, rose petal bath soap, two fantastic patterns, and so much more!

In amongst all of this treasure was this beautifully stitched exchange piece...

How pretty is that? Yuko is an amazing stitcher/finisher, her work is absolutely perfect. I have longed for a piece of her needlework and I am honored to display this in my new home. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Yuko for this extra special exchange I shall treasure it.

The next exchange piece arrived from Jenn F. I must say that it is the perfect design to display in my Vermont house...

Now that winter is upon us I feel as if I should delve right in and finish this beauty. Jenn and I were partnered in the Fair & Square round #27 exchange. I have been collecting F&S blocks for quite some time but have yet to decide what to do with them. Should I put them all in one Friendship quilt or should I finish each one separately? Hmm, still can’t decide.

Do you see the beautiful beaded scissor FOB? Jenn gifted me with that gorgeous gift as well, how lucky can one person get. Thanks again Jenn you are a very special blogging friend.

Well, the boys were here for Thanksgiving but have left. One headed back to NYC and the other back to college. It is so nice to be within driving distance of them…Texas was just too far away! As always we had a great Thanksgiving holiday with our relatives. This year we had another reason to be truly thankful: On Monday my youngest son (who graduates May 2012) had a 2^nd interview for an Engineering position in a large company here in the Northeast, and the day before Thanksgiving the company extended an offer to him which he intends to accept. I am so happy and proud of him, he returned to school to begin his final semester knowing that he will graduate with a job...that is certainly a reason to be thankful!

Another Move And Finally Settled

I have decided that I will not move again, it is too much work. We finally returned to the Northeast where we purchased a home in Vermont, exactly where I have always wanted to be. We had one month to get the interior painted before all of our belongings arrived on a truck from Texas. The past three months were spent unpacking hundreds of boxes, a task that I have done a number of times before and one that I refuse to do again. As the cold weather approached we rushed to get the exterior of the house painted and despite a number of obstacles our mission was accomplished. I do love the new color of the house that we now call home:

I never get tired of looking out at this view...

This past weekend these mountains were snow-capped. Yes, it is hard to believe but the first snowfall of the season arrived prior to Halloween.

I longed for the day when I could wake up in a house free of workers, enter my new sewing room, sit at my Koala sewing center and quilt. In January this new table was delivered to my house in Texas but I left Texas (and my table) in mid April.

Well, the workers are gone, my sewing room is somewhat in order, and when I sat at the sewing center I discovered it had been damaged during the move. YIKES! The electronic sewing machine lift is non operational, there are scratches and a few dings. I am stressing over how the insurance company will resolve this. The sewing center was in my Texas house for only 16 weeks before we left for Vermont. It remained untouched until the movers arrived in August to pack/move our belongings. By October I managed to find my way to the sewing room and unpack all of the boxes (yes, I avoided this room...way too many boxes). I was shocked when I used the remote to activate the lift and heard the horrendous noise while watching the lift struggle to move! I just want the insurance people to take it away and get me a brand new one. I did not purchase a "reconditioned" one thus I do not want them to attempt to fix it...we will see what happens.

Moving was certainly one reason why I have been quiet in blog land but another reason is because my 5 year old Dell computer has become problematic. What should take 15 minutes to do now takes hours; so very frustrating. I started using my iPhone for EVERYTHING except blogging. A week ago I purchased a MacBook Pro which I know nothing about, as a result I had to wait until my sons came for a visit to get me up and running. I am still in the dark so today I purchased the book, "MacBook For Dummies" and if that doesn't enlighten me I will enroll in a class.

I wish that I had more stitching to share with you but the move kept me far from my stitching basket. I managed to complete "Angel of Hope". I changed the hair color because I wanted the Angel to look more like the person I am giving it to

Well, we have officially left Texas leaving the summer heat and humidity behind…as well as some very dear friends who I shall miss. As with every move I find myself surrounded by hundreds of moving boxes but unlike my previous move I now find myself surrounded by my two sons who visit frequently and help out constantly; for that I am truly elated and thankful. I am also surrounded by the beauty that this New England state has to offer. Each and every morning I wake to this view and think... life is good!

As my life returns to normal I am hopeful that my posting will be a little more frequent.

Now that I am in the Northeast, I am able to see my DS more frequently. A few weeks ago, I headed into NYC for another day in the city with my oldest son. He is so sweet; once again, he toured me around the city visiting Bryant Park, Central Park, the Garment district and Times Square.

One of my favorite places is Bryant Park. This is the perfect place to grab some lunch, relax in the park and enjoy the beautiful weather.

After a bit of a rest we headed to Central Park where we strolled through the park enjoying the sights. I especially enjoy seeing the horse and carriages parading down the streets of the city.

For me, a trip to NYC would never be complete without a visit to the Garment District. Oh, to bask in the glory of all of this gorgeous trim...in every imaginable color!

Here is a picture of my latest trim purchase. I feel so spoiled to have a son living in NYC affording me the opportunity to walk the streets of the garment district frequently.

As we wrapped up our day in the city, we approached Times Square and saw this friendly guy:

A true bonus to receiving this ornament is that I had the pleasure of meeting Carol S. face to face at the Celebration of Needlework show in Nashua, NH last Friday. I have been “blogging friends” with Carol for what seems like an eternity so having the opportunity to meet and spend time with her was fantastic. Since I have moved from Texas and will be living in the northeast, I look forward to getting together with her again. Carol, thank you so much for the gorgeous ornament!

I enjoyed the Needlework show and managed to add some great items to my huge stash. I will post pictures of my purchases later.

Another highlight of my trip to Nashua, NH was meeting Carol’s friend Margaret, who I know I have exchanged with in the past. We had a great time getting to know one another over dinner. How I wish that I could meet all of my blogging friends face to face.

My blog posts have been minimal but there is a reason, as I mentioned I am once again moving. I left Texas and am in the process of house hunting in the northeast. Truly awesome! The sewing machine drops down into the cabinet with a push of a button leaving me with a large flat surface, which is perfect for basting a small quilt.

Anxious to put my new sewing table to good use I headed to Bonnie Blue Quilts and purchased this pattern, along with all of the fabric needed to complete it...

I managed to get all of the 9 patch blocks done before I realized that I needed to make 2 baby quilts by April, 1 graduation quilt by May, and another baby quilt by July. For now the Bonnie Blue Quilt must wait as I tackle those “must do” quilts first.

This is such a cute pattern that is relatively quick to stitch. I did decide to hand appliqué the 12 duck blocks which slowed me down a bit but I like the way they turned out.

As for stitching projects….well, I keep starting (but fail to finish) SO many small projects. It is getting ridiculous, I need to gather them all up, dedicate a few days to “catch up” stitching, and complete these projects once and for all.

I know, I know, I have been very delinquent with my blogging ~ I will try to be better about that (no promises though).

2011 ~ A New Year!

Another year OVER and another year OLDER. Here is a picture of this year’s birthday cake:

D-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s, absolutely delicious! A chocolate cake with thin squares of chocolate scattered inside. I ate far too many slices but fortunately I still managed to drop an additional 3.5 pounds over the holiday/birthday...not sure how I managed that!

A huge thank you to Cathy for the wonderful birthday surprise! I just opened her package and found this beautiful pendant that was designed by one of my favorite designers, Deborah Thorpe of Midsummer Night Designs.

2010 Birthday Gift from Cathy B.

Hmmm, how pretty would this look on a silver chain? Or maybe I will look through my Midsummer Night Designs patterns and find one that I can attach the pendant on to. Then again, I may take one of Cathy’s suggestions and use it on an ornament. For now, and maybe always, the pendant will be placed on my silver necklace so that I can enjoy it throughout the year.

When I saw Cathy’s post with all of the GORGEOUS tatted ornaments made by her talented Mom I quickly emailed to see if I could purchase some. Here are a few that I ordered…

I did give a few away to friends of mine who loved them and asked if I made them. Yes, I told the truth and gave credit to Cathy’s mom.

These beauties are on the top of my list of favorite ornaments. I love them so much that I refuse to put them away until next year. They remain on my vintage fir tree so that I can see them daily! Many thanks to “Mom” for filling my order on such short notice.

Now that the holidays are over it is time for me to take a look at ALL of my UFO's and to determine how I will manage to complete some of them. My life is a bunch of unfinished projects! Yes, my goal for 2011 is to finish, finish, finish so much of what I have started and cast aside.

A Sweet Reason To Post

Quiet? Yes, I have been very quiet and this is probably because I have done very little stitching.

Yesterday Edgar gave me a truly SWEET reason to blog. I received an unexpected package in the mail that I anxiously opened. I am not signed up for any exchanges and I had not made any recent online purchases so I could not imagine what this package held. When I opened it and read the card I immediately said to my DH, "Edgar is so sweet!" He sent me the most delicious chocolate covered cherries, a jar of Peach Jam that I am sure is delicious, and white chocolate candy filled with dried cranberries and nuts...SWEET. With every bite, my brain screamed FABULOUS!

Thank you Edgar for being so thoughtful. You made my day that much sweeter and put a much needed smile on my face! :D

So, what has kept me busy these days? A little bit of this and a little bit of that. I have decorated my house for the holiday starting with this new wreath for the door.

Lastly, I have been busy rearranging my sewing room in preparation for the arrival of my newly purchased Koala Sewing center. I purchased this at the International Quilt Festival in October and can hardly wait until it is delivered this month. I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will be able to maneuver the 400-pound table up my curved stairway.

For now my sewing room is a MESS and I must get up there and work on organizing all of my "stuff"

It Doesn't Feel Much Like Fall Around Here

Oh how I love the fall, especially Halloween but I must say I am missing "Fall in New England". It just doesn't feel much like fall around here so I decided that I had to get busy and drag out the Fall/Halloween box to decorate the house. Now that so many of the stores have all of the Halloween decoration out on the shelves I need to try to stay out of them; I always seem to find something new that I must have.

A Few Exchanges

Where in the world is sweet Heather??? Since the quilting bug bit her, I hardly ever see any of her beautiful cross-stitch work. Well, she did complete this beauty not too long ago but much of her blog these days highlights her gorgeous quilts! I was so happy to be able to participate in a personal Fall exchange with her and was excited when her package arrived. Knowing Heather I knew that it would be amazing.

Heather selected a design from My Aunt's Attic website and stitched it on 32ct linen using a pretty fall variegated floss. She selected the most wonderful fabric, one that truly compliments the design and matches the floss perfectly, and she stitched up the gorgeous Project Bag. How could I not love this one??? I tore through my unfinished projects and selected a Scarlett Letter project to tuck away inside the bag. Many thanks Heather, you are a dear friend!

I was a bit undecided on what to stitch for Heather; should I stitch a Halloween Design or should I stitch a Thanksgiving design.....Hmm??? Sort of like Heather's Blog title "Quilt or Stitch? how about both. Okay, Halloween or Thanksgiving? How about both.

I love using Anna Lee dolls to display a cross stitched piece so when I came across this handsome Pilgrim I snatched him up and took him home. And what do Pilgrims bring to the table to feast on? A Turkey.

Since receiving this really nice glass mason jar from CathyB I have been anxious to make one. Luckily I took her advice and rushed out to locate these cute little canning jars before the stores ran out or packed them away until next season. It did not take long for me to select a Halloween design: A pumpkin.

I have been quiet because I have been busy… QUILTING. Yes, I have been spending more time behind the Bernina these days. I recently completed a baby quilt for my neighbor, who will be having her 1^st baby at the end of this month. I participated in a shop hop with some friends when I came across a pattern by Bunny Hill Designs titled, Binkies on Broadway. Having recently seen the new baby room I knew that this was the perfect design. Fortunately, I was able to complete the quilt before the arrival of the new baby; that’s a first.

I still want to “audition” a few more fabrics but I must get started soon. My son’s friend will be having a baby in early November and I offered to stitch a baby quilt; what was I thinking???

A few weeks ago, our Quilt Guild held their first ever quilt show, and what a fabulous show it was! Seriously, they had 200+ quilts on display and about 40 vendors, not bad for a local quilt guild. I decided to enter my miniature quilt for judging and was very excited when I saw it on display looking like this:

Yes, I won two ribbons! I won 1st place in the miniature category and I was awarded a ribbon for Best Precision Piecing. The quilt measures 15"x18" and consists of 331 hexagons, all hand pieced.

I just mailed two exchanges so I should have some cross stitch pictures to share in my next post….whenever that might be.

Where Is The Good In Goodbye?

92 DAYS…He was here for 92 days but now he’s gone. On August 21st he boarded a flight to the Northeast to return to college. Today he officially begins his junior year; let the fun (stress) begin! (GL,GL,GL).

Was I sad to see him leave? His room is no longer a mess, the media room is no longer littered with big red plastic cups, I have barely any laundry to do, multiple pairs of shoes no longer carpet the kitchen floor, a body is missing from the couch, and dinner is not worth making. So yes, I miss him! He makes me laugh, always.

They leave you with the pain of an empty bedroom, an empty clothes closet, a pantry with no “junk” food, an all too quiet house, and this song playing on the radio:

I love the tiny count and can truly appreciate the work that goes into stitching on it. Both are so beautifully stitched and finished.

I was glad to hear that my partner for this exchange was Suzanne. She stitched a gorgeous Ornament for me in an Ornament Exchange last year so this gave me the opportunity to stitch for her. Home From The Big Apple

It seems like just yesterday that I was climbing into my car, Lily in tow, heading out for my “one man/one dog” 1600+ mile road trip to NYC. I am home now, life is getting back to normal, and I have finally found time to update my blog.

Ride with me on a journey to NYC...

Somewhere in either Louisiana or Mississippi I stopped for gas and was very surprised to see this:

It made me a bit leery about driving through this state. How many people do you think pull up and get “one for the road” ~ CRAZY, don’t ya think?

Fortunately, Lily and I made it safely out of this state. We drove through LA, MS, AL, TN, VA, WV, PA, NJ into NY. We were very happy to see this:

I was riding with my son into the city thinking how very excited and happy HE must be to see me and to know that I was going to hang out with him for 3+ weeks.

That was until we passed this lovely billboard:

That small dose of “reality” served to interrupt my delusional thinking long enough for this “helicopter Mom” to comment, “That’s terrible” ~ and my son, well he just laughed and slowed down long enough for me to snap the picture.

We arrived at his high-rise apartment in Manhattan (doorman included) where I was given a tour. The apartment is on the 19th floor but my favorite place was up on the rooftop where they have lounge chairs, tables, and an unbelievable view of the city (especially at night).

I will be heading out at about 7:30AM (just 6 hrs from now…I need to get to bed!) to begin my 1600-mile trip to New York, NJ, MA. Little Lily (6# Yorkie) will be the perfect road companion, quiet and sweet. I will be attending a HS graduation party in Massachusetts, which will give me the opportunity to see many of my relatives, I will get the chance to see a dear friend in NJ, and I will help my son move into his Manhattan apartment. I'm not sure when I will be returning home, probably at the end of June so this will be my last post for a while.

A Woman On A Mission

I am exhausted, really I am. I lack sleep and I hear the humming of the Bernina in my ears! I sat behind my sewing machine for hours sewing a quilt top. I wanted to make a graduation quilt for a relative using the school colors of the college that he will be attending. The problem is he did not make his final decision until the very end of April. Once the decision was made, I had to select a design and I had to do it quickly since I needed to construct the top, get it to the quilter, and get it back into my hands before the end of May. Yikes! Given the time constraint, I thought that I would do a very simple design, like a rail fence...

No, this is not what I wanted to make so I continued to look until I found the perfect pattern. Two hours into the construction of the quilt top, I knew that I made a huge mistake. It was going to take me FOREVER to complete it. Too late now, I had cut so much of the fabric there was no turning back. There were a few days that I started sewing at 11AM and continued until 2AM. It all paid off because I completed the top and dropped it off at the quilters on Monday. She promises to have it back by May 24th, which gives me ample time to apply the binding before I leave for New England at the end of the month. And what did I manage to stitch in 4-5 days???

I hope that all of the Mom's had a wonderful Mother's Day. I talked with each of my boys on Mom's day; it would have been nicer had they been here. They sent me a great gift, a Video Conversion System. Now, I can convert my old VHS taped to DVD. Prior to moving to Texas I had quite the scare, I thought that my DH sold our VHS storage cabinet (with all of my VHS tapes) during his yard sale; you know the ones you cherish like the birth of your children and all of their birthday parties. I was devastated! Well, as luck would have it, he did not sell the tapes; he had packed them in a box. That episode made me realized how important these tapes (memories) are and I decided that I needed to convert them to DVD’s, now I can.

I must say that an even better Mother’s Day gift will arrive on Saturday. My youngest son is returning from college for the summer….Yahoo!

I was so excited to see a package in my mailbox from Edgar; I am such a fan of his work! I knew immediately that he must have had my name for the Ornament Exchange run by Becky. Well, you can only imagine how quickly I tore into the package and how wide my eyes got when I saw this beauty…

Gorgeous, simply gorgeous! Edgar chose a design called “Christmas Pinkeep” from the JCS 2007 Ornament issue. Oh how I wish that it were Christmas so I could hang it on the tree. For now I will display it on a one of many small display trees around my house… this is much too nice to tuck away until December! Thank you Edgar for all of the time that you put into stitching and finishing this beautiful ornament…I shall forever remain a fan of your work and blog!

I have been busy behind the Bernina stitching up those "pain in the neck" quilt exchange blocks. We had one set due May 1st and the next due July 1st. I will be heading to NY/MA for the month of June so I had to stitch the July blocks early. I love the block but I cannot stand stitching them! Here is a picture of the two sets…

Off To See the Wizard

I am happy to report that I have finally put needle to thread on my Primitive Wizard of Oz. I saw this design on Michele's blog many months ago and rushed to purchase it. Sadly, I did not rush to start it! I have watched as Michele made progress, each time telling myself that I should get started. When she posted a picture of the completed design I decided that the time had come! It is a relatively quick stitch (nothing like my HAED WIP) so I knew that all I needed to do was pull it out and take that first stitch. After not so many hours of stitching here is my progress...

I am using all of the colors called for except for the green, which I changed to NN Creme d menthe. It will not be long before I complete this one and get it framed to hang on my sampler wall.

After waiting many weeks for my Victoria Sampler order to arrive, I spent two days stitching the Ireland and France International Hearts. This is a gift for my aunt, a gift that I needed to get it mailed this week (which I did, phew!). I was in a rush to get to the post office and snapped a quick photo ~ a quick "not so good" photo!

I received a surprise package containing some very sweet See’s Chocolates from my very SWEET friend Paula C. She sent me a box of my favorite See’s Lemon Truffles (delicious) and she also sent me an extra special gift, a beautiful bookmark that she made. I do not know a thing about “tatting” but it certainly does not look like it would be an easy craft. Paula did a wonderful job~this is truly gorgeous. I cannot bring myself to use the bookmark; instead, I am displaying it in with my small Limoges boxes. She also included the cutest little fabric bag, take a look…

Thank you dear friend for your thoughtfulness, it certainly brought a smile to my face.

I spent this past weekend at a Stitching Retreat in San Antonio and had a great time. The highlight of the trip was getting to meet Cindy and her friends but I do not have time to post about this today (I must get ready to head out to a quilt guild meeting). It will take me quite a bit of time to prepare a post about what an amazingly productive stitcher Cindy is. Wow, you will be SHOCKED when I share with you how much stitching that girl can crank out in a weekend! ;)

A Visit To New Orleans

My sons flew from the northeast to New Orleans on a Habitat for Humanity Volunteer trip. They have done this a number of times but this is the first time that we were able to meet them there. Now that we live in Texas the drive was a mere 350 miles and well worth it to spend a few days exploring the French Quarters and visiting with them both. I had only driven through Louisiana but never had the opportunity to see New Orleans; here are just a few pictures:

My son warned me that I would not like Bourbon street…he knows me well, I did not but I did enjoy the French Market and the many street performers.

I had the opportunity to stand in an endless line of people at the popular Café Du Monde so that we could enjoy coffee and beignets. Yes, I did indulge but was unwilling to go on camera eating these high calorie treats but I was quick to snap these:

Always clowning around and making us laugh my younger son posed for a picture with his New Orleans girlfriend:

Like any true stitcher, I spent more time packing up my “cross stitch” bag for this trip but I did not work on one thing the entire weekend.

It truly is “A reference publication for fiber, color and stitching”. As I read the first issue, my eyes danced through the What’s New section; 6 pages of beautiful Threadworx fibers. The new colors in Wool, Cotton Floss, Legacy, and Metallic are eye-candy for sure! Reading a bit further, I came across creative pattern designs that utilized these wonderful fibers. Be sure to print out the reference pages they offer a very helpful Fiber Guide detailing which fibers, including number of strands, can be used with various fabrics.

Who is the mastermind behind the new Threadworx Journal? The very talented Beth Hendzlik, the designer of Fanci That cross-stitch designs! Being that I am such a fan of her designs, I was very excited when I met up with her through online blogging! I was honored when Beth asked if I would be interested in stitching the cross stitch model for the Threadworx Journal Bird Club Series. Each issue will feature a Bird Design with Pattern/Stitch Guide and will highlight a particular fiber, February featured the Cardinal and April will feature the Hummingbird.

Below is a picture of the Cardinal design that I stitched. To understand the meaning of “Creating with Fiber” you must look at what Beth did with the design after I returned it to her…it is awesome!

Now how great is that? I just love the finished look! Beth added the featured fiber: Legacy fiber, which gives the feathery effect. Detailed instructions for creating this look can be found in the premiere edition of Theadworx Journal.

I love Beth’s idea of making each of the birds into an ornament to display year round. I think one would look so cute perched in my new Feather Tree.

Becky stitched for me in the Christmas Ornament Swap. Wow, this is truly a gorgeous ornament. It has been beautifully stitched and finished and I simply love the Opalescent fabric; perfect for this holiday design. I love that the backside is personalized:

I recently attended a Saturday class at My Little House (Katy, TX) where we learned how to make this little Wool Feather Tree. The class was wonderful, probably because Jan, the instructor/shop owner, is a fabulous instructor and a wonderful person! When I left, I purchased some additional wool to make a few more of these; one will be a purple wool tree for Easter. I am thinking of making a larger Wool Feather Tree to display some of my cross stitch exchange pieces.

When I walked into My Little House I was in heaven! There is such a wonderful selection of gorgeous wool, a huge array of rug hook and punch needle patterns, as well as some beautiful shop models to inspire you. Not long ago I took my first Punch Needle class with Jan which I enjoyed. I am hoping to attend her regular Wednesday "Hook In" so that I can dedicate some time to my new punch needle project.

The deadline is looming and I am once again stressing over the completion of the next set of Pink and Brown Quilt Blocks! Although we have 2 months to make each set I tend to wait until the last minute to make the blocks. With only 7 more days to finish the 3rd set I am busy trying to complete 5 more blocks. Here is the block that just drives me crazy:

I must end so that I can head up to the sewing room and complete the remaining blocks. Oh, how I would rather sit down and pull out my PS Alphabet SAL or my HAED A Moment To Cherish!

Yikes, it’s February!

Welcome to what is turning out to be my “monthly” blog post! I shall try harder to post more frequently.

This has been a very busy month as I try to keep up with the five exchanges that are due in early March. So, did I tell you all that I was not going to participate in as many exchanges this year? Every December I declare to the world that I will limit my exchanges so that I can dedicate more of my time to stitching the many LARGE projects that I have been neglecting. However, by late January/early February I am busy sending out “sign me up” emails to the exchange moderators! A tally of my yearly exchanges is proof enough that I am not succeeding in lessening my exchange stitching… 2007 total 24, 2008 total 28, and 2009 total 33. On the flip side, I do have an abundance of gorgeous exchange pieces from so many talented stitchers.

I also found time to have one of my older samplers re-framed; yes, I did stitch this in 1985. It was in a frame that went nicely with one of the homes that I have lived in but the frame did not work well with my current Sampler Wall. Here it is newly framed:

They had these delivered to my door just days before Valentine’s Day, how sweet is that??? Mystery Stitching Angel

I received a Stitches ‘N Things Gift Certificate for my birthday and I do not know who the sweet stitcher is that sent it to me. The “From” section on the gift certificate is blank and when I phoned the shop they had a record of the order but not the person that placed it. So… to the Mystery Stitching Angel, Thank You! Please, please, please email me so that I can properly thank you for this wonderful surprise? :D

Yes, just prior to the New Year I turned the BIG 50. I cannot say that this milestone bothered me it did not; birthdays never do. I was just so happy that both my sons and my son’s girlfriend were here to celebrate with me. One of the highlights of my birthday was this beautiful Quilt cake:

My DS managed to find a local bakery and send them a quilt picture for "inspiration" ~ I was impressed with the delicious cake the baker managed to create!

Now for some stitching…

I am participating in the LHN Ornament SAL and have completed Ornament #1 Fa La La. Actually, it is almost complete I just need to stitch a yellow bead in the lamp light for the flame.

This is my first 2010 finish and I am happy to say that I plan to keep it. In an effort to get a jump-start on future exchanges, I did stitch it again and hope to do this with all of the LHN monthly ornaments.

I am embarrassed to say that it has only taken me 10 months to start hanging pictures on my walls. We resist what we do not like to do and for me it is trying to figure out what to hang where. Here is the start to my sampler wall:

I have about 6 more finished designs that I need to get framed and about 1,000,000,000 on my To Do List.

I will leave you with a picture of the flannel quilt that I started when we had our Vermont house. I wanted to make a Fall Quilt, one that would look perfect on the bed in VT. By the time I finished it we had sold the Vermont house, sold the Connecticut house and left New England for Texas. The quilt is fine for the winter but I must now concentrate on making another quilt for the summer. The idea of a flannel quilt draped on the bed in the August heat is dreadful ~ almost as dreadful as the idea of whipping up a king size quilt in just a few short months!

Two More Generous Stitching Angels

Yes, I have been blessed by the generosity of two more stitching angels...

Three years ago, when I was venturing into the world of Blogging I was in need of assistance as I struggled to set up a blog. I am thankful that I met up with Vonna because with her help I managed to get myself up and running. She answered many of my “how to” questions and was always very patient as I stumbled. Fast forward three years and I am happy to say that I now know what I am doing (most of the time) but more importantly, I am still friends with this wonderful woman!

I recently received a package from this dear friend ~ Vonna bestowed this beautiful BBD Wool Appliqué Friendship Tree pillow upon me...

I love the design and the color selection matches perfectly with my flannel quilt. Thank you so much Vonna, your gift touched my heart! You will always remain a dear friend and I still hold out hope that someday we can be neighbors…I move a lot so there is hope. :D

Just days after Vonna's box arrived I received a package from another dear friend, CathyB. What a surprise to open it and find these beauties...

Yes, my mouth did drop open and does each time I pick these up…can you blame me? I do not know too many stitchers that do Hardanger work and I do not know any that do it as well as CathyB. I am thrilled and honored to receive the beautiful Fob and Doily.

I have a collection of small Limoges hinged boxes that I display in my coffee table, some have doily's under them and some do not. I knew immediately that this is where Cathy's Doily would go and I knew instantly that I wanted more so I have added "Hardanger work" to my 2010 "To Do List" ~ Wish me luck!

I am participating in a quilting block exchange with a group of friends. Every other month we are to turn in a set of nine brown and pink block, the pattern is the same every month but the fabric selection is different. Here is a picture of the last set that I submitted...

We will each end up with 54 brown and pink blocks that I am hopeful will work up into a beautiful quilt top but we do not finish the exchange until September 2010 so it will be a while.

For the very first time I was able to meet a fellow blogger in person and it was really fun. I learned that Missy lives in a few short miles from me so we made arrangements to get together and stitch. I can't say that we got much stitching done but we certainly did do a lot of talking and I look forward to stitching/quilting with her again. Thanks for stopping by Missy!

A great PS Halloween Pinkeep, some adorable buttons, and some DMC floss. I was so surprised when I read Lisa’s note and learned that when she read about the MIA stitcher on the PS Fans blog she immediately contacted the moderator and offered to step in and stitch an exchange piece for me. I must say that was so thoughtful and such a generous gesture on her part! Although we were in the same exchange, I did not know Lisa nor had I ever visited her blog but she found it in her heart to stitch me a wonderful pinkeep. With all that she had to do during this busy holiday season she still volunteered to “make right” another person’s “wrong” ~ Lisa, you are a stitching angel and I cannot thank you enough. I will treasure your pinkeep; it will be a constant reminder of your selfless generosity.

Now that I have actually put needle to fabric and stitched most of the PS "A" block, I feel like an official member of the PS Alphabet SAL group. With much of this block completed I look forward to stitching the remaining 25 letters!!!

What's That White Stuff?

My first winter back in Texas and I am welcomed with a wonderful snowfall....

December 2009 Snowfall

This is very unusual for the Houston area and I am not too sure when I will see it again. For me it was a mere "dusting" but for the natives it was reason to close schools early, close shops early, dump 2 bags of sand at the entrance to the bank, and for some a reason to drive down I-10 with the hazard lights on. Like so many others, I left my house with camera in hand to capture the moment. When I am wishing for the whitecap mountains at Okemo in Vermont, I will grab this picture and glance at the "whitecaps" on my house. Yes, we had snow one day and 71 degree temperatures the next!

With all of that snow, I am ready for Christmas. I spent much of the day turning the tree from this:

The ornament is stitched on very tiny count; it looks like 40ct over two (?) ~ truly perfect stitching and finishing. Pilar inserted dried lavender inside so the ornament smells wonderful, such a nice touch!

2009 Exchange Finale

Oh my word, there are so many seed beads perfectly stitched along the outer edge! What a fabulous job stitching and finishing this piece ~ Paula, you are a pro and you are always so good about personalizing. Here is a picture of the back (see what I mean about those tiny beads?).

As I sat at the table opening all of the gifts I truly felt like it was Christmas morning. I opened beautifully crochet slippers, a knitted kitchen wash cloth that has a steaming cup of coffee knitted into the design (very cute), a coffee themed dishcloth and some tasty coffee, some nicely scented kitchen soap as well as a small purse size, a handy notebook and notepad, a really neat stitcher’s caddy, and a box of See’s chocolate candy! Not only did Paula send a box of my very favorite candy she had them fill it with my favorite Lemon Truffles. I am nibbling on a truffle right now and I am in heaven!

Have you seen these? How cute is that? I saw the pattern while shopping at the International Quilt Festival this past October. I had never seen this before and I knew immediately that I would be stitching this for Tracy. She Was Too Busy ?????????

I recently learned from the moderator of the Prairie Schooler Fans, that my partner in the PS Halloween Exchange failed to send me an exchange piece because she was "too busy" ~ I am wondering how busy she must be that she could not even acknowledge or thank me for the exchange that I sent her. Fortunately, I am not too busy to post this:

As one person stated on the Prairie Schooler Fans Board: May you constantly be reminded of your poor behavior each time you look at the exchange piece that I sent you.

I honestly understand that things happen in a person's life and sometimes people are unable to meet an obligation. If you have a legitimate reason (and let's face it "too busy" is not an excuse) please just email the individual and let them know.

A number of people commented on my earlier post regarding MIA Stitchers stating that we should name names...I am naming names in hopes that people think twice about slighting another person and going MIA. For all the trustworthy stitchers and wonderful exchange group moderators, I hope this is of assistance to you ~ be on the lookout.

After spending the entire weekend scrapbooking, I was glad to get home and feast my eyes on Cross Stitch. Waiting for me was a large envelope from Kerstin who was my partner in the final round of FTT Seasonal Fall Exchange. I was so excited when I opened the package and found all of this:

Kerstin stitched a fun design on some ginger type fabric then finished it into this great little pillow. She sent me two pieces of neat cross stitch fabric in my favorite fall colors, a large cut of cotton fabric that compliments the cross-stitch fabric perfectly, two skeins of hand dyes threads (such gorgeous colors) and two new patterns for my stash. What a way to finish this year long exchange with a very talented group of women. Thank you so much Kerstin for this amazing exchange, I love everything that you sent and I adore my new decorative pillow.

I must thank Cathy for organizing the FFT Seasonal Exchange and for inviting me into the group. It was one of my favorite exchanges and I feel so blessed to have received beautiful exchanges from four talented, generous and sweet women. Thank you to Kerstin, Brigitte, Moni and Gaby!

Exchanges: One Down Four To Go

Over the course of three years, I have participated in 80+ exchanges. I have never been late in mailing, and pride myself on always meeting my commitments. Fortunately, those assigned “my name” have been just as responsible. There have only been three individuals (I shall not mention names but shame on them) that failed to honor their commitment and have forever gone MIA. That averages only 1 per year so I cannot complain but I will never understand how people can receive an exchange and not send one.

Here is an exchange that I sent out over three weeks ago but I have yet to hear from the individual, she has not responded to my email, and I have not received her exchange so I must assume that she too will join the ranks of MIA.

It is hard to believe that I only have 4 more exchanges this year! One of those is already packaged up and ready to mail, the other three need to be stitched. Maybe next year I will do as I had planned and not sign up for as many exchanges. Like everyone, I have so many projects that I would like to complete. The WIP basket keeps growing, as does the new stash bin ~ so many projects so little time.

My new neighborhood is large and filled with children so I thought that I would need quite a bit of candy for Halloween. I purchased 12 bags of the Fun Size chocolate bars but only used 6 so I quickly tossed the rest into a flat rate box, taped it up, and mailed it to my son at college. I certainly do not have the willpower to keep all that chocolate around.

Costume creativity was top notch this year. The one that made me laugh was 4 teenage boys standing at my door with only their boxers on and a gold medal around each of their necks. They quickly stated "We are the US Swim Team" ~ I thought that was rather clever. As for this year's cutest trick-or-treaters:

I am heading out this weekend to attend a Scrapbook retreat. I have attended quilt retreats but never a scrapbook one. I just found out that the retreat is being held a mere 26 miles from my house, somewhat close for a weekend get-a-way. I am not much of a scrapbooker and I have very few scrapbooking gadgets. I never intended to add Scrapbooking to my list of hobbies but I am on a mission to create three scrapbooks for family vacations to London, Paris, and Tokyo ~ after that I call it quits!

Fabulous And Fun Exchange

In 2007 I participated in 24 exchanges, in 2008 I topped off at 28 and my 2009 total (thus far) is 28. That is a total of 80 exchanges and I am SO happy to report that I have finally been blessed with a wonderful piece stitched by Edgar! I have been an admirer of his work for quite some time and secretly wished to one day receive something stitched by his hands. If I saw his name on the list of exchange participants, I would think “oooooh, maybe this time!”

My DH walked in with the mail and handed me a box. You can imagine my excitement when I saw the return address label…Yahoo, my heart skipped a beat! As I rushed to open it I was running my mouth about Edgar and his amazing stitching, I am not sure my DH understood a word that I said. I carefully opened the package and saw this fantastic Pinkeep:

I did not get to gaze at it too long before my DH took it from my hands and, impressed with what he saw, commented that it is quite nice. Edgar select a BBD (one of my favorite) titled Trix or Treat and stitched it on 28ct Birds Of A Feather Sandpiper using WDW and Gentle Art threads.

And look at this fun backing fabric!

Cute huh? Edgar also included the display stand, which was sweet of him.

He packed the box with a bunch of fun, and I mean fun, Halloween treats.

I love everything but I especially loved the Lip Pop and Pez dispenser. Not only did they make me laugh they made me wish that I had thought of sending that in my exchange ~ very cute! It would be an understatement to say that I am over the moon with this exchange. I guess you can say that wishes really do come true! Edgar, I cannot thank you enough for the wonderful pinkeep and the many treats; you certainly made my day!

I spent the last two days at the huge quilt show here in Houston viewing beautiful quilts and walking in an out of over 900+ vendor booths. My company has left, the house is quiet, I am exhausted, and I am definitely ready to plop on the couch and stitch for as long as I can keep my eyes open.

Treats And More Treats

And what a treat it was to open my Halloween exchange from Paula C and find this beautiful Halloween Ornament that Paula stitched:

I truly love it! “Happy Jack” makes me smile; he is so very cute (and perfectly stitched and finished). The design was taken from the 2009 JSC Halloween edition.

The box was packed to the rim with so many wonderful treasures:

I gasp when I saw the box of See’s chocolates…my very favorite. It did not take long for me to gobble that up! I shall save the other edible treats for later. Paula also treated me to some of her very useful scrubbers. These top my list of favorite kitchen gadgets they really do work! My kitchen is now looking more festive with the Halloween dishtowel, orange scrubber and washing cloth. There is also a cute pumpkin pincushion, two fabulous Halloween fat quarters, ribbon, and post it notes. Thank you so much Paula for this amazing exchange it was such a treat and you are such a treasured friend! :)

Halloween Happiness

And just look at this smile (this guy loves his self portrait)...

The minute I saw this skeleton doll I knew what I would do with him ~ I was going to make him the main attraction in my personal Halloween exchange with my good friend Paula C. I had planned on stitching a design from the new Prairie Schooler Boo Too You leaflet and when I saw this doll, I knew exactly which design I would stitch ~ the skeleton. He is stitched using DMC glow in the dark white and finished using a glow in the dark trim that I found on eBay. It did not take long before I knew that I would like to have one of these for my house. I rushed back to the store to get the other doll but sadly, someone else loved him too, he was gone. That is okay, I am just happy that Paula loves him as well!

There are so many wonderful designs in Boo To You leaflet, I could not help but stitch this Haunted house for Paula as well....

Two New Exchanges

The mail carrier was good to me yesterday; he left two wonderful packages in the mail. The first was from Patti who stitched for me in the Year Long Prairie Schooler exchange. She stitched this pretty design on 40 ct and used a great decorative trim on the edge, very nice choice!

Next, I received an amazing exchange from Ronel who stitched for me in the FTT Needlework exchange. I am not certain that the pictures will do this justice…

Ronel is a master at Stumpwork and I am truly honored to own a piece of her work. The detail on this is amazing; can you see the owl’s eyes? They are tiny! The flowers are a combination of red seed beads and French knots (?) and the dragonfly is made from beads with wings stitched in gold thread. The stitching is perfect in every way.

Oh, did I mention that it is a needlebook? This too is perfectly constructed. Given the range of Ronel’s talent, I imagine that she made the lovely pins as well. Ronel also stitched a beautiful little scissor fob, personalizing it on the back with my initials.

In addition Ronel included some Madeira Silk threads (in my favorite color), needles, a pink tape measure, charms, and a fragrant sachet. Thanks you so much Ronel for a wonderful exchange!

I am such a HUGE fan of the M Design and especially love the word/name trees. Over a year ago I purchased name tree designs for both my boys and, although I have not barely started stitching on one, I REALLY hope to finish them both this year!

FYI: tomorrow is September 9, 2009...09/09/09 what a great birthday that would be. Well, I just read that not only does the date look good, but it also represents the last set of repeating, single-digit dates that we'll see for almost a century (until January 1, 2101). Hmm, I wonder where I will be then? :)

Struggling to put needle to fabric on Wintery Heirloom one would wonder why I managed to press ADD TO CART becoming the proud owner of both designs!

Let me state this very clearly “I have BIG DREAMS of completing A Moment To Cherish before one of my sons decides to marry”~ With a 20 and 22 year old, I think (hope) I still have time!

But WAIT... did I have BIG DREAMS of completing that Folk Art Wedding Quilt for one of the boys? A beautiful block of the month by Robyn Pandolph. I believe I did, and over the course of about 4 years, I have managed to complete 4 of the 12 blocks…

So why, why, why do I continue to buy, buy, buy???
